Two siblings began the E&J Brandy winery in 1933, following the repeal of Prohibition after years of developing and selling grapes. E&J were fighting against larger, more established, and better-financed corporations, including more than 800 wine firms set up in the first few years after the reversal of the Prohibition in California USA. Their opening money was less than $6,000, with $5,000 of that obtained by Ernest from his Girlfriend's mum. The brothers learned the craft of industrial winemaking by translating the old, pre-Prohibition pamphlets distributed by the University of California which they reclaimed from the basement of the Modesto Public Library.

In 1986, the Gallo brothers sued their young brother Joseph for trading cheese marked with the Joseph Gallo Farms name. Joseph then counterclaimed, insisting that Ernest and Julio conspire to steal his share of the estate from their late father. This claim carried the winery, where the evidence granted by Joseph's solicitor advised that it was, started by their father. So Joseph Gallo then lost both suits and was ordered to change the name of his company to Joseph Farms.

In the 1990s, Gallo Winery made an understanding with Gallo Pasta that the latter would not sell their pasta in the U.S. Gallo registered a cease-and-desist order in April 2009 against "The Spanish Table," a Seattle-based practise food retailer, for transferring the pasta despite the previous agreement with the maker.

E&J Brandy was among the engineers of Wine broadcasting on television and started many Wine promoting crusades. They were the first to introduce brand guidance and common merchandising to the Wine business industry and led the way in inventing new products to store shelves. They were the first in breakthrough quality leadership such as long-term grower contracts for varietal grapes and grape research programs. E&J were also the first to establish a truly prestigious international sales and marketing force to export California wines overseas.
